Things to do in Zimbabwe on your 4×4 adventure

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa recognised for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it inside reserves, parks and safari areas. On the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls make a thundering 110m drop into narrow Batoka Gorge, where there you will find 4×4 adventures and white-water river rafting. Downstream are Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to rhinos, hippos and birdlife.

Nyanga National Park

Situated in the stunning mountain range that covers the eastern part of Zimbabwe, Nyanga National Park is an area of evergreen forests, high grasslands, cliffs, waterfalls and beautiful lakeside cottages. Trout fishing is very popular and the trout hatchery is well worth a visit. For the twitchers, there is lots of birdlife to be seen on a hike. You can also go “4x4ing” through the beautiful outdoors and explore some beautiful, exotic areas.

Just a few kilometres from the town of Victoria Falls is the Zambezi National Park, a scenic reserve that remains astonishingly remote and is having a substantial recovery after decades of poaching and negligence. The riverine sections are predominantly attractive and the wildlife more abundant. This is a good spot for self drive 4×4 exploring as there is no end to the possibilities here, and space is not limited.

Attractive Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city is rich in historical relations and is the home of the National Museum. Nearby are the prehistoric Khami ruins, while to the south is the Rhodes Matopos National Park, famous for its exotic formations of huge stonework boulders. Dams with outstanding fishing, caves with rock paintings and Cecil Rhodes’ grave also add to the town’s admiration with tourists.

A holiday in Zimbabwe would be incomplete without a visit to the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, the largest multifaceted of ruins in Africa south of the Egyptian pyramids. These amazing and extensive stone remains are all that is left of a powerful city-state that thrived between the 13th and 15th centuries, trading in gold.

Harare

Zimbabwe’s capital Harare is the country’s commercial and industrial centre and also the usual starting point for a 4×4 holiday in Zimbabwe. It is a clean and classy city, categorised by colourful parks, blossoming trees and modern architecture. Local sights also embrace art galleries, various museums and craft markets. Due to its pleasing climate, Harare is recognised as the ‘Sunshine City’.

The string of mountains and the lush countryside in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands are particularly sought after by 4×4 travel enthusiasts as there is so much space to go for outrides and family rides. Climbing Zimbabwe’s highest mountain, Mount Nyangani, takes around an hour and half. The World’s View bids unbelievable outlooks across northern Zimbabwe. At this point it is incredible to invest some time to take a drive out in a 4×4 with the family or even friends and explore the great outdoors. Not all vehicles or people can handle the terrain, and this is why 4×4’s are permissible here.
