Our 4×4 rental specialists have expanded 4×4 hire to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. When considering a trip to Zambia one should look to hire a 4WD vehicle to navigate this beautiful yet somewhat rugged terrain. This will allow for access to even the most remote locations whether on a guided tour or a self drive 4×4 adventure.
Previously known as Northern Rhodesia, Zambia is made up of a highland mesa and is approximately 1000 metres above sea level, which then rises toward the east and in the north, along the border of DR Congo which houses massive reserves of cobalt, copper, lead, zinc and coal, the mining of which is of extreme significance to the economy. Tourism is also of increasing significance with the glorious Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River marking the border with Zimbabwe. The game parks of Zambia, although not as well-known as those of Kenya and Tanzania, are large and have a great amount of wildlife of all types. Zambia is one of Africa’s newest democracies with its first multi-party elections in 1990.
Things to do in Zambia on your 4×4 adventure
The Beautiful Victoria Falls
‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ or otherwise known as the ‘smoke that thunders’, which is the local name for Victoria Falls. At most times of year the falls is an inspirational sight: 1,710 metres wide and drop between 92 and 110 metres into the Batoka Gorge. An average of 560,000 cubic metres of water per minute plunge over the gorge and at high water times the spray can be seen from 25-35 kilometres away. The Batoka Gorge forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Today, visitors come here not only to look at the Falls themselves but also to try the many adventure activities available in the area – 4×4 riding, white water rafting, river boarding, jet boating, bungee, micro-lighting, helicopter flights, sunset cruises and elephant back safaris just to name a few that might interest you, but the most enjoyed is the 4×4 outrides as they are truly something worth going for as the experience is like nothing you have ever experienced, and for those who have done this will understand; but do try this at Victoria falls for a whole new experience! Most of the tours spend several days in the area, just outside Livingstone, which is the nearest town, giving the opportunity to view the falls themselves and to try some of the adventure activities that are accessible.
When should you Travel In Zambia?
Zambia has rainy seasons that generally run from November through to mid-April with the cooler winter months being drier. Temperatures are hottest in the build up to the rains at the end of October, and so the best time to go for an outride on 4×4’s and to participate in all the other recreational activities that are available in the midst of the warmth.
Victoria Falls is generally most spectacular at the end of the rainy season in March when the waters are high. In October, November and December the flow of water on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls is light so at this time of year it is worth taking the trip across to Zimbabwe where the flow of water is much greater. Zambia is full of exotic plant life and beautiful outdoor sights to see, and this is a place you should seriously consider visiting. Go on tours with a 4×4 through the exquisite outdoors; this is the place for Photographers to capture beautiful wildlife photography at its best.
